What in the World is Mycorrhiza?

Plant SuccessThis year the Viroqua Food Co-op happily carries mycorrhiza products again. You’re probably asking yourself what in the world is mycorrhiza?  Mycorrhiza is important soil fungi that works with plant roots to facilitate nutrient assimilation.  Studies show these organisms improve soil structure, seedling vigor, root and plant growth, and lead to increased yield.

We sell two forms; the Plant Success Granular is in a 16 ounce container and this formula is made to mix in with your soil when starting seeds or transplanting. It’s also OMRI (Organic Materials Review Institute) approved.  The Great White product contains the most advanced combination of mycorrhiza, beneficial bacteria, and plant vitamins available on the market today.  It dissolves in water and makes a great occasional fertilizer. Both have nutrients that plants need, as well as the vehicle to help them move into the plants. Try some this year!

The April 2011 issue of ACRES USA has a good article about mycorrhizal fungi starting on page 14. The article explains how it works and has some great pictures showing plants grown with and without the fungi.
