Local and homegrown - 2011 Kickapoo Earthday Celebration

 
Join in the two-day 2011 Kickapoo Earthday Celebration filled with entertainment, speakers, activities, food and libations created by ourselves, right here in the Kickapoo Valley. This year's theme is Indigenous Ties to the Land.

April 22 beginning at 6:00pm and April 23 at 10:00am, the activities will take place in large tents and in the community building in the Readstown Park, come rain or shine. The Park is located at Highway 14 and 131.

The Festival opens Friday evening at 6:00 pm with songs, dance, Native American history and an original composition by William Neil titled This Land Overflowed. Local wine, beer and cheeses will be served. Admission is $10. This event takes place in the Readstown Park Community Building.

Saturday will be a day of:

  • Activising and awareness raising 
  • Local music, performers and skits
  • Academics, activists and organizers
  • Non-profit and eco-vendors tent
  • Visual art on the grounds
  • Organic food and drink vendors
  • Local beers and wines after 5:00pm

A few of the Presenters include

  • Bill Christofferson–Author of “Man from Clear Lake” about Gaylord Nelson
  • Pete Nowak PhD–UW Madison Rural Sociology–Conservation challenges in rural Wisconsin
  • Glenn Reynolds—JD, MS–Environmental lawyer–focusing on indigenous law–will speak about fighting the American Transmission Company in the Madison area.
  • Kim Wright JD–Director of Midwest Environmental Advocates–will talk about fighting the proliferation of genetically modified organisms (GMOs).
  • Sonya Newenhouse PhD–Madison Environmental Group, Community Car, Newen House–will talk about her new business marketing small super insulated houses.

A couple major project will also be showcased throughout the event including the progression of Alvin Felch’s “As So Above and Below” community sculpture and Randy Neu’s “Facing our Future” mask making project.

The pinnacle of the event with be an Anti-Transmission Line community theatrical event stagged by a number of the events participants and requiring participation by attendees who wish to take part.
