by Greg Chessebro, Beer and Wine buyerCanned beer has gotten a bad rap over the years. Cheap, watery beer that tastes like aluminum hasn’t helped the canned beer cause. There really are some great beers in cans. Oskars Blues Brewery was the first craft brewery to put quality craft beer in cans in 2002. It was a huge and risky investment for the brewery to put in a can line, but they turned out to be the trendsetters. Now many fine beers are available in cans.
All beer, either from bottle or can, should be poured in a glass for maximum enjoyment. This allows your nose to get in there and smell around.Cans are the best package for beer because there is no light contamination and zero air contact. The cans of today are sealed with a water based polymer lining, so no beer touches the aluminum. Cans are also lighter for shipping and they don’t break like glass does.
At the Co-op we try to have a good selection of canned beer to choose from. I, of course, like some of the bigger beers put out by Oskars Blues. For those who like lighter beers for the summer, the Konig Pilsener (available in can) is crisp and refreshing. If you feel like supporting breweries that are closer to home, Capital Amber and anything from Point Brewery would be great choices. Enjoy those cans.
