Our Co+op
We are a grocery store but so much more. A food co-op is a grocery store owned by your neighbors and by you if you choose. Unlike chains, we are independent and owned by folks who shop here. We prioritize local farmers and producers and are committed to organic agriculture. We round up our change for non-profits and create space for the community to gather.

The Seven (+1) International
Cooperative Principles
Like all cooperatives, Viroqua Food Co+op operates under the following guiding principles.
Cooperatives are voluntary organizations, open to all persons able to use their services and willing to accept the responsibilities of membership, without gender, social, racial, political, or religious discrimination.
Cooperatives are democratic organizations controlled by their members, who actively participate in setting their policies and making decisions. Those serving as elected representatives are accountable to the membership.
Members contribute equitably to, and democratically control, the capital of the cooperative. The economic benefits of a cooperative operation are returned to the members, reinvested in the co-op, or used to provide member services.
Cooperatives are autonomous, self-help organizations controlled by their members. If they enter into agreements with other organizations, including governments, or raise capital from external sources, they do so on terms that ensure democratic control by their members and maintain their cooperative autonomy.
Cooperatives provide education and training for their members, elected representatives, managers and employees so they can contribute effectively to the development of their cooperatives. They inform the general public about the nature and benefits of cooperation.
Cooperatives serve their members most effectively and strengthen the cooperative movement by working together through local, national, regional and international structures.
While focusing on member needs, cooperatives work for the sustainable development of their communities through policies approved by their members.
*The ICA (International Cooperative Alliance) is considering adopting an eighth principle, and we embrace this change at the Viroqua Food Co+op.
Cooperatives seek to incorporate diversity, perform equitably and ensure inclusion at all levels of their organizations to better serve members, show members they are valued and ensure members receive equitable service.
