Turkey Tips

Preparing the perfect Thanksgiving turkey can elevate your holiday feast. Whether it's your first time hosting or you're a seasoned pro, we've made a simple guide to ensure your bird is juicy, flavorful, and ready to impress your guests.

1. Choose the Right Turkey

Select a turkey that suits your needs from our variety of birds below. A frozen turkey needs several days to thaw, while a fresh turkey is ideal if you're short on time. Aim for about 1 to 1.5 pounds of turkey per person.

2. Thaw

If using a frozen turkey, thaw it slowly in the refrigerator. Allow approximately 24 hours for every 4-5 pounds. For quicker thawing, submerge the turkey in cold water, changing the water every 30 minutes. This method requires about 30 minutes per pound.

3. Brine (Optional)

Brining can enhance flavor and moisture. Dissolve salt and sugar in water and soak the turkey in this mixture for 12-24 hours in the refrigerator. Rinse the turkey and pat it dry before seasoning with your favorite flavors.

4. Season

Generously season the turkey inside and out. Use a blend of locally sourced herbs like rosemary, thyme, and sage, along with garlic and onion powder. Don’t forget to season the cavity, which adds depth to the flavor.

5. Add the Stuffing (Optional)

If you’re stuffing your turkey, prepare your stuffing ahead of time. Stuff the turkey just before cooking to prevent bacteria growth. Always use a food thermometer to ensure the stuffing reaches 165°F.

6. Roast

Roast your turkey at 325°F. Cooking times vary: allow 13-15 minutes per pound for an unstuffed turkey and 15-17 minutes for a stuffed one. Baste occasionally for a golden, crispy skin.

7. Rest

After cooking, let the turkey rest for at least 20-30 minutes before carving. This allows the juices to redistribute, resulting in a moist turkey.

Follow these steps for a successful Thanksgiving turkey that will be the centerpiece of your celebration. Happy cooking!
