Co-ops Build a Better World
Author: Jan Rasikas, General Manager
At the Viroqua Food Co+op, everything we do starts with remembering why we’re here. In today's fast-paced, convenience-driven world, a mission-driven, community-oriented business like the co-op is essential to building a strong local economy that is rooted in our community and cares for the well-being of our environment.
At the heart of the co-op is our ownership structure. We are democratically owned by the people who shop in the store. Co-op owners invest in the local economy and ensure that food dollars circulate within the community every time they shop. Unlike big box food stores, which are often owned by a small group of shareholders, a food co-op is owned and controlled by community members who use and benefit from the services of the co-op.
As a co-op, we commit to environmentally friendly practices. We work to reduce waste, decrease our carbon footprint with 132 solar panels on the roof, and recycle the heat from refrigeration units to meet 90% of our hot water needs. The co-op prioritizes small-scale local farms that adopt sustainable, organic, and regenerative farming practices. This benefits the environment by preserving soil health, reducing pesticide use, and protecting water quality right here where we live.
Part of our work is to connect shoppers to the origins of their food. A direct connection between shoppers and local producers builds trust, mutual support, and a sense of community. Focusing on local production reduces our reliance on distant supply chains. It strengthens the food security and resilience of the entire Viroqua area, particularly during disruptions like natural disasters or economic crises. More than 30% of what you purchase at the co-op is from the 100-mile radius that we call local, directly supporting small farms and food producers and putting millions of dollars into our local food economy.
A thriving food co-op like ours significantly contributes to a more resilient, connected, and sustainable local food system. At the core of this business is you, co-op owners and shoppers. Thank you for your commitment to cooperative principles and your patronage — we’re so glad you're here!
