Cedar Grove Cheese

Plain, Wisconsin | 58 miles

Cedar Grove Cheese, located in Plain, Wisconsin, is a dedicated 135 year old family-owned creamery. They specialize in producing a variety of traditional Wisconsin (farmers, mozzarella, cheddar, jack, Butterkäse, etc.) and specialty artisan cheeses. Current owner and operator Bob Wills married into the Cedar Grove family at 35 and had no prior experience cheesemaking. Today, Wills is an award winning certified Wisconsin Master Cheesemaker for cheddar and Butterkäse.

Since taking over at Cedar Grove, he has focused the creamery’s attention on lessening their environmental impact. From their commitment to sourcing milk from 24 local farms (who all pledge to not use rBGH in their cows), to their Living Machine waste water treatment facility that naturally treats Cedar Grove’s 7000 gallons of daily waste water using an elaborate system of hydroponic plants and microbes that mimic the purifying power of wetlands—it is easy to see their commitment to environmental sustainability throughout the operation.

Beyond their impressive efforts to reduce their environmental impact, Cedar Grove is an important cheesemaking incubator in Wisconsin. Uplands Cheese Company’s Pleasant Ridge Reserve was developed and initially made at Cedar Grove and St. Brigid’s Meadows Organic Cheddars are currently produced at the facility.

Additionally, in 2012, Cedar Grove opened Clock Shadow Creamery in the historic Walker Point Neighborhood in Milwaukee. This new venture is Wisconsin’s first and only urban creamery and serves as an incubator for urban cheesemaking. Check out Cedar Grove Cheese’s delicious products in the VFC Cheese Section. We carry a variety of their certified organic cheese (raw milk cheddar, mild cheddar, farmers, and mozzarella) along with their unique and highly sought after seasonal water buffalo mozzarella.
