Holland's Family Cheese, Maker of Marieke's Gouda

Thorp, Wisconsin | 96.9 miles

Holland’s Family Cheese strives to make the most delicious farmstead raw aged Gouda you’ve ever tasted in Thorp, Wisconsin. The story of this award winning farmstead cheese company began when Marieke and Rolf Penterman, both of who grew up on small dairies in Holland, moved from the Netherlands to Wisconsin in 2002 with dreams of starting their own dairy farm. They were attracted to Wisconsin due to our vast dairy farming background, friendly people, and cheap farmland (when compared to Holland).

After dairy farming for a few years, Marieke sought to add value to their milk by making cheese on the farm. She embarked on a new adventure by studying and receiving her cheesemaking license and apprenticing on a boerenkaas, a small farmstead dairy, in Holland.

In November of 2006, Marieke made her first batch of traditional Dutch aged Gouda in Thorp. Marieke’s Gouda is now made in 13 different flavors that are produced on their farm from raw rBGH-free milk from their herd of dairy cows.

Since beginning as a cheesemaker, Marieke constantly strove to make the highest quality cheese in the United States. In 2013, she was rewarded when Marieke’s 6-9 Month Aged Gouda was crowned grand champion at the U.S. Cheese Championship in Green Bay, Wisconsin, earning it top honors of all U.S. cheeses.
